How stress affects our bodies and minds

Racial and ethnic populations bear a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality.  Once dismissed by researchers and society-at-large, recent studies have documented that individuals who experience racism have greater rates of illness and are increasingly stressed. Preventable chronic diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes soon follow. Stress plays a key role in racial disparities resulting in chronic diseases and creating a need to develop culturally sensitive approaches to reducing stress in racial and ethnic populations.

Curls on the Move addresses this by creating a space for women of color in the world of wellness, a space they have been long underrepresented.  By teaching de-stressing and breathing techniques, relaxing yoga stretches and mindfulness in a cultural framework, women are provided an opportunity to take a mental and physical break, reduce tension, and release stress. Trainings for Curls on the Move instructor certification is under development to bring this much-needed resource to yoga studios, church groups, and community centers near you.
